Why run against the incumbent, Vicki Truitt?

  • She’s been there forever.  Six terms.  If you believe in term limits, here is your chance.

  • The incumbent has abandoned the republican principles of smaller government and lower taxes.  She authored a bill (HB 9) to raise the gas tax by 10 cents a gallon in the middle of a financial meltdown with people protesting in the streets. Then, according to the Fort Worth Business Press in June of 2009, she criticized other legislators who were trying to “protect their seats”.  Do you suppose they noticed that thousands of people were protesting the growth of government and loss of freedom?  Vicki Truitt is out of touch.

  • The incumbent also voted to increase the business tax in HB 3 in 2006 which now has some businesses that are losing money still paying taxes to the state.  According to the legislative budget office, business taxes about doubled as a result of this legislation.  That’s not conservative or sensible.

  • The incumbent also authored a bill to require health insurance as a condition of acceptance to college (2009: HB 1875). Said one Texas mother, “This is outrageous.  I am a single mother, and with the state of the economy right now, I'm having to make a lot of sacrifices in order to finish my degree so I can get a better job to take care of my son.  One of those sacrifices is health insurance.  I'm an adult, and it's my choice.  What's next?  Dental coverage?  Flood insurance?  Extended warranty on my car?  Where do you draw the line?” This sounds like an independent, freedom minded Texan.  Truitt’s bill was a sort of universal health care bill and this is a stunning proposal for a representative in the most conservative district in the most conservative county in the State.

  • The biennium State budget went from $145B in 2006 to $168B in 2008 (an increase of 15.8%). And then the budget went to $182B (an increase of 8.3%) in 2010.  The money is there for local transportation if there is political wisdom to adjust priorities.

  • Having taken a turn against true conservative values in these cases, Ms. Truitt was ineffective in getting the legislation passed.  So far, so good. But if she wins this election, grab your wallet.
